I thought only big cities could get fiber optics. Is the Topsham service the same thing?
Yes, the fiber optics run by Topsham Communications is the same fiber that is used in big cities. When fiber optics were new, only metro areas were able to afford the installation costs. Now installation costs have been reduced and rural areas are able to install fiber optics for about the same cost as installation of conventional copper lines.
Will Topsham's phone service have 911?
Yes, the Enhanced 911 service is mandated by the State of Vermont and New Hampshire and will be maintained through Fairlee and Orford service areas.
Will I still be in the phone book with Topsham's telephone service?
Yes, your telephone number will continue to be in the Verizon/Fairpoint telephone directory.
Will I keep my phone number if I switch to Topsham's telephone service?
Yes, you will keep your current telephone number only the company providing the service will change.
Is phone service for local calls and long distnce charged per time used or flat rate?
Local service is charged per minute at a rate of 3.5cents per minute during peak hours (M-F 9:00am-9:00pm) and 1.5cents per minute during off peak hours (M-F 9:00pm-9:00am). Long distance rates vary depending on the long distance carrier used.
Will Topsham Communications high speed be fast enough for me to work from home?
Several of our current customers in the Topsham Telephone service area are working from home via the high speed connection.
Could we set up a web camera and view the lake all year via the high speed connection?
Yes, a web camera would work if set up properly, however, your computer may time out or go into hibernation after a period of no activity. The high speed internet remains connected all the time and is fast enough to do streaming video so it is possible.
I am off the grid & use solar power. Can I shut off the modem power when I don't need it?
Yes, we have other customers who are also off the grid.
Will a fire/burglar alarm system work with Topsham's service?
Yes, we have customers with alarm systems that are tied into their telephone service line. We also have customers with alarm/camera systems that transmit using the high speed internet connection.
Can I keep my present email address if I switch to Topsham 's Internet service?
Included with Topshams internet service you get 4 email accounts which will have the address of _mytopsmail.com. If your email is through a free online provider such as yahoo.com, gmail.com, hotmail.com etc. then you can maintain your current email and will continue to access it by going online to the server. If your email is through your current internet service provider and you are changing providers then, yes, your email will change when you change service, although some companies allow you to take it with you for a fee.
The wires to my house are all buried. Can I still get Topsham Communications service?
Yes, Topsham Communications is currently running aerial fiber optics cable throughout the area. To have buried service you must have a spare conduit going from the telephone pole to your house.
